Artful Therapeutic Gardens: Metaphors for Healing & Growth

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

ROOM 809

The garden is an inspired place, naturally imbued with metaphors of growth, healing, and renewal. Therapeutic work in the garden can help young clients discover healthy ways to cope with challenging feelings and behaviors such as anxiety and aggression, in addition to learning self-regulation. Along with supporting literature and case studies, this 90-minute paper session will present the story of the Children’s Therapeutic Garden at a Toronto mental health center dedicated to children. The therapeutic garden provides a welcoming, normalized environment for children and families who may otherwise feel stigmatized in a mental health setting. Artful garden interventions teach these children and families to interact cooperatively and positively, building stronger relationships and improving communication. Participants will experience the hands-on activities used at the Children’s Therapeutic Garden, and learn to utilize garden metaphors to inspire therapeutic action.

Eligible for 1.5 Credits: ATCB, NBCC; ASWB, APA, MFT, Nursing; SWNYS
