During this day in the ceramics studio, we will explore the unparalleled benefits of working with clay in counseling and psychotherapy. Kagin and Lusebrink's Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) and Kagin's Media Dimension Variables (MDV) confirm that clay is a material that engages all stages of the creative process and embodies all treatment possibilities. In working with clay in therapy, pioneer art therapist Janie Rhyne taught us to listen to, not analyze, the form. She taught us to focus, guiding us through a process of describing toward an understanding of the dialogue between clay and hands — between creation and Self. In this daylong master class, we will examine clay from all angles as a vehicle for healing. Through case example, hands-on discovery, clinical theory, and writing, we will learn to expand the metaphors that arise when we pay close attention. Only then can we employ the gadgets of archetypal therapy, as described by Hillman and Berry, to deepen metaphorical listening. In working with our clients, we can offer this process, encouraging them to trust the image, listen for—and to—metaphor, and be in direct touch with the shape of healing through their eyes, hands, and hearts.
