ROOM 710

Mindfulness is not only a state of mind, but a practice that can be nurtured to raise self-awareness and deepen one’s attunement to the present moment. Both the Structural Dissociation Model (SDT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) endorse an active relationship with the practice of mindfulness to help find balance in emotions and relationships. Sensorimotor skill-building methods also employ mindfulness practices to track and distinguish physical sensations from trauma-based emotions. When integrated with SDT, DBT, and sensorimotor skill-building, expressive art practices can teach clients to embody somatic and cognitive experiences more effectively. Through case presentations and experiential demonstrations, this workshop will discuss the integration of these various models and methods, and explore the reciprocal and synergistic relationship between mindfulness and expressive art practices.
