ROOM 808
We create the template of our attachment style during infancy, through our relationship with our primary caregiver. That first dance of intimacy influences how we conduct all of our future intimate relationships. If that first dance did not offer satisfactory regulation for our incomplete infant nervous systems, our sexual partnering can turn problematic. This 90-minute workshop will examine concepts from the social engagement system, as defined by Stephen Porges in his Polyvagal Theory, to explore ways to help clients develop healthier attachment styles. The basics of attachment theory, the mechanics of the social engagement system, and the concept of the “relational dance” will be covered. We will examine how the nuanced interactions in a relational dance can knock us off-center, creating wonderful and terrifying arousal. Participants will engage in art, movement, and written exercises to learn the process of re-centering and grounding the self.
